Has the Pandemic Become Endemic?

I’ve been using the phrase, “then, Pandemic happened” to define and describe a period when my life changed for good—whether I wanted it to or not—and I’m certain many of you have used the phrase also.

It’s become one of the most relatable and universally recognized phrases for the missing moments, life-altering adjustments, re-shifting of mindsets, interrupted routines, and loss of moral convictions most people experienced during the pandemic and since. How long will the effects of the pandemic continue to interfere with our lives? We must get over it at some point, right? Or has it become endemic?

The pandemic revised normal living and redefined one’s true self and strengths. It put everyone in front of society’s mirrors and let us know, with resounding confirmation, that we’re not the deciders and determiners of our lives.

“The pandemic’s not over for a lot of folks,” according to an April 2024 article in HealthDay News-US News magazine. “We found that the pandemic fundamentally altered neighborhoods, communities and everyday routines among aging Americans, and these changes could have long-term consequences for their physical, mental, social, and cognitive health.” The article also reported that, “75% of Seniors are dining out less and 62% are visiting cultural and arts venues less. More than half of Seniors report that their routines remain altered post-pandemic.”

Many Seniors find rejoining “normal” life a challenge. Many believe we’ll experience another pandemic. Try not to allow the mental effects of the pandemic to become endemic and linger in your mind and stifle you. Take baby steps and ease back into your life. Start with limited interactions and take part in small gatherings. We’re still a susceptible age group, so wear a mask if it makes you feel more comfortable and safer.
