Do You Trust the Universe?

“Just trust the universe.” It’s a phrase we often hear, but what does it really mean? For some, it’s a spiritual belief in a guiding force, while for others, it’s a way of embracing the unknown with optimism. Trusting the universe is not about expecting everything to go our way; rather, it’s about letting life unfold without unnecessary frustration over things beyond our control, especially as we age.

According to a Pew Research Center survey, a significant majority of Americans (around 81%) believe in “something spiritual beyond the natural world,” which could be interpreted as a form of trust in the universe, with only a small minority (17%) stating the natural world is all there is.

Some Seniors may use “the universe” interchangeably with God’s will or divine order. Others may see the universe as a vast mystery governed by physics and natural laws—and others might embrace the idea of the universe as a guiding force, like karma or destiny. They may believe in manifestation or the idea that the universe holds their plan and destiny.

Many Seniors believe that the universe offers guidance that leads them toward the right people, places, and experiences. They believe the universe provides a sense of support and helps them make decisions that align with their highest good—and encourages a perspective that fosters resilience and inner peace.

Throughout history, various spiritual traditions have viewed the universe as a benevolent force, assisting those who are open to its guidance—a guidance that shows up in many forms. It can be an intuitive gut feeling, unexpected clarity, or that repetitive inner voice. Remember, trusting the universe doesn’t mean passivity. It means being aware of our actions and aligning them with the universe’s flow.

Ultimately, trusting the universe is about embracing life as it comes, letting go of fear, and allowing ourselves to move forward with faith—whether in a spiritual sense or simply in the belief that things will work out as they should. As we age, trust in the universe can offer a sense of peace and calm that supports successful aging.
