Are You Updated?

Most of us don’t think about keeping our seldom-needed documents and personal identification up to date until it’s too late; then it becomes more than an inconvenience. You can’t get medical treatment; you experience unnecessary stress; and a simple situation has become a complicated mess. What were once minor tasks have become major problems. Don’t let it happen again. It’s time to update your life and upgrade how you live.

You might be asked to prove your identity or show where you live in all sorts of situations: visiting the doctor, checking into a hospital, filling a prescription, applying for benefits, getting a state ID card, voting, or renewing your driver’s license. FYI: even if you aren’t driving, you might be asked to show ID during a traffic stop. This and other unexpected instances go more smoothly if your information is up to date.

More unique situations that may require an ID include a person with dementia found wandering who can’t explain who they are or where they live. Also, someone who hits a casino jackpot or other prize will need identification for tax purposes. Without it, the payout could be rescinded.

It’s just as important to keep your essential cards and paperwork up to date. Take a few minutes to go through your wallet and important paperwork; check your driver’s license or state ID, Medicare card, medical insurance card, veteran’s identification, Social Security card, and any other validating documents. Make sure your address is current. Replace any documents that are damaged, out of date, or no longer have the correct information. If everything is up to date, you have one less concern in an already stressful situation.

Check your important records at least once a year. Keeping them up to date is another way to look after yourself; it’s a small habit that protects your independence, saves time, reduces frustration, and helps ensure that when life requires you to prove who you are, you’ll be ready.

And that’s successful aging.
