Aging Smarter—with a Little Help from AI

Recently, I helped a client navigate her new smart medication dispenser. Just as she felt comfortable with the app, another update appeared. She paused and said, “Keeping up with technology feels like I’m chasing a moving target. Sometimes I wonder if trying new things is even worth it.”

In my work as a Certified Senior Advisor, I see how artificial intelligence is impacting aging, often pushing older adults and caregivers out of their comfort zones and into unfamiliar territory. How do we help them keep up so technology continues to support rather than overwhelm them? It’s a fair question.

The good news? Artificial intelligence already makes life better for older adults, often in ways people use every day without realizing it. My goal is to help ensure these benefits reach people in ways that support independence and confidence as they age.

Voice assistants are one example. Devices like Alexa or Google Assistant can remind users to take medications, manage grocery lists, answer questions, or call family with a voice command. Smart home technology—connected lights, thermostats, appliances, and plugs—can support daily routines and make aging at home easier. Motion sensors and monitoring systems found in some homes and senior communities detect falls or unusual movement patterns and alert caregivers or family. And AI-powered financial tools help older adults monitor spending, detect unusual activity, and support financial planning.

Healthcare is another area where AI is making a difference. Wearable devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers use it to monitor heart rate, sleep patterns, and activity levels—identifying patterns that may signal concerns. Artificial intelligence is also helping physicians analyze large amounts of data and develop more personalized care plans, especially for complex conditions.

Artificial intelligence should never replace human connection. It works best when it supports caregivers, families, and healthcare professionals rather than replacing them. As these tools evolve, AI will play a greater role in how we age—helping us protect our health, manage finances, and stay connected. Used thoughtfully, it becomes more than technology. It becomes a partner in helping us live well—longer, healthier, and more connected. That is what successful aging looks like today.
