Just When You Thought Were You Retired

How older adults feel about traditional retirement has changed. Why are so many choosing to leave their days of leisure behind and return to work, or work past retirement age? One big factor is older adults today are much healthier than past generations and are living longer—and while that’s wonderful news, it comes with some concerns: the fear of outliving one’s retirement income and the possible need for more financial security.

For many retirees, life after career is a commitment to service and volunteering. For others, it’s taking their hobby and turning it into a small business. Then, there are those who simply discover they weren’t ready to retire and still want to work. If you’re one of these individuals, you’ll need to figure out what you want to do now that retirement isn’t fulfilling you. Do you want to work in a role you’ve had before or do something entirely new?

Before you make any moves, you’ll want to learn about the perceptions, misconceptions, and discrimination many older adults face in the workplace, as well as the laws that protect them. How to navigate new work and social environments using the tools of emotional intelligence and self-awareness will be key!
