Unstuffed Means Unstuck

Nothing more upsetting than when you can’t find something—and in looking for and finding that thing, you get sidetracked to an uninvited walk down memory lane. Now you’re overthinking, crying, stressing out, getting upset, and dealing with emotions you hadn’t felt in years. None of it had to happen, but the stuff got in your way! And now you’re stuck; you’re right back through the door you thought you closed. It’s time to get unstuffed and unstuck!

Each day, you have an opportunity to move past the stuff that keeps you stuck. Getting unstuffed and unstuck requires a clear understanding of your current and future needs. That includes your lifestyle needs, your medical needs, and your actual and unpredictable needs. You must decide what to keep and what to purge. But you may be thinking about how to purge, instead of why.

When you’re purging your life of unnecessary stuff, how are you making those decisions? Decisions in matters like this are usually made based on lack of use, takes up too much space, don’t use anymore, or making the home safer and more accessible.

Instead, think about how these items make you feel when you see them? Do they take you back to a bad memory, bad time, or bad experience? Do they make you feel stuck? If yes, maybe it’s time to purge!

Take time to through your stuff and determine: What items make you feel happy without also making you feel sad? Which items do you need for your activities of daily living (things you require to survive)? Which are you holding onto because you’ll feel guilty letting them go? These questions are most important because they get rid of the indecision and fringe “stuff” places in your life. Now, you’re ready to purge.

It’s the stuff that keeps you stuck and doesn’t allow you to age in place comfortably, contently, and peacefully. It’s time to get unstuffed and unstuck!
